Our Black Friday Tradition

On Friday instead of participating in traditional Black Friday madness Rod and I continued our tradition of decorating the house and attending the Indianapolis Circle of Lights at Monument Circle.

I was excited to hang my two new ornaments from a couple of ornament exchanges I had participated in this month. The first was one from Sunny California!

The other was a couple of foodie related ornaments!

We hung the lights on the outside of the house and decorated with our new Christmas tree that we picked up last year after the season was over. It is SO much bigger than our old tree so it took a lot longer to put up than normal.

The dogs have their stockings and ours are hung. After we got the house decorated we had a frozen pizza for dinner while making hot chocolate to take down to the Circle! We even made peppermint whipped cream to top our decadent dark hot chocolates. Yum!

Each year we bring the dogs as it’s a great opportunity to expose them to crowds and celebrate the season with them. Here I am with Mario waiting for the “tree” to be lighted. We only go for the end of the concert and lighting but it’s always really special to be there when they do the countdown and flip the switch!

I love that Rod and I have our own tradition to kick off the holiday season! It’s only our fourth year of decorating and going to watch the tree lighting but it’s always so much fun. If we ever have kids it will be great to share this with them!

After a long blogging hiatus…

We have returned! There’s going to be quite a few posts about our trip to Fort Wayne to visit Ross, Liz and Jack; our trip to the Indiana Dunes; Colorado pictures and anything else we’ve forgotten about this fall!

This morning I made cinnamon apple oats for Rod and I using one and a half golden delicious apples, copious amounts of cinnamon and just a regular serving of oats. I topped mine with a little sugar-free maple syrup and he used poplar syrup.

I think Mario really wanted some of our oats! ;)

Caroline just wanted to get to the park!  :)

Before heading to the park with the dogs we also started a batch of chili to warm up the cool evening. We use bloody mary mix for the soup base and then we’re going to pair the chili with a nice hearty, multigrain roll. YUM!

When we got back from the park Rod and I started assembling our new bookcase and entry table from IKEA. We decided to go yesterday and finally pick up our first anniversary present to each other - new furniture for the bedroom and a few things for the first floor!

I’m loving the MALM dressing table as our new entry table complete with the clay pot that we won at a silent auction supporting the East 10th Street Children’s Center!

I also love how the EXPEDIT bookcase separates our living room from our dining room much better now - it also gives us SO much storage!  Plus we can display some of the unique beer we picked up in Colorado (until we drink it that is)!

img_4429

Here’s our new bed and nightstands - it’s low enough so that Caroline can jump on the bed plus there’s all kinds of storage in the nightstands!

I hope everyone has been doing well and apologies again for being SO far behind on our blogging!  How has everyone been?  :D

It’s state fair time!

More when we get back…

A Long Weekend Deserves a Long Entry?

This past weekend was great, I was off starting at 11:30 on the 2nd and won’t be going back until this afternoon!

We started off the weekend with a tapping at Rock Bottom and drinks at both Buffalo Wild Wings and Scotty’s Brewhouse in downtown Indy on Thursday night.  On Friday we had lunch at Creation Cafe and picked up a few items at Goose the Market for a delicious dinner of steamed mussels, crusty bread and beers.

A few pictures of the start of the weekend:

Scotty’s Brewhouse has a great Outdoor Patio

img_2476-1

The patio has a great view of downtown and Chase Tower!

img_2505

We started the mussels by sweating the vegetables.

img_2519

We cleaned the mussels and discarded any open ones.

img_2535

Caroline was completely bored with the process.

img_2537

Mario was just tired and wanted a nap!

img_2533

We steamed everything together for the sauce.

img_2550

To thicken the sauce and avoid using heavy cream we pureed a few mussels to make the dipping sauce.

img_2566

Why hello there - what is this?

img_2570

We topped with the sauce and served with crusty bread.  A TOTAL success!

It was a great weekend including a stop in Cincinnati to pour beer for the City of Montgomery’s Fourth of July Festival.  I hope everyone had a safe July 4th and a great long weekend!  :D

The other day I saw a bear…

a GREAT BIG BEAR - a way up there!  Just kidding - when we went camping we didn’t see any bears. ;)

A few weekends ago we went camping during one of the biggest storms of the summer!  It was lots of good conversation and lots of good food. The weather was really hot and really humid but I would recommend Morgan-Monroe State Forest for anyone looking to go camping in Indiana.

A few pictures from our weekend:

Nothing beats bacon, eggs and coffee while camping!

Mario was never that thrilled about the trip and he was a tick magnet!

The Outback ended up looking like it was in a car advertisement!

img_2319-11

We were most proud of our fire that we were able to start after the rain!

Morgan-Monroe was a great place to go camping and we had a really relaxing weekend.  The trails were great and the only downside was how hot and sticky the weekend was after the storm rolled through Friday night.  I can’t wait to go again and take advantage of cooler temperatures!  :)

A Sunny Sunday

Today was a very busy and productive Sunday at the Harbison Weaver Household!

We washed the baseboards, did laundry, swiffered the first floor, mopped the third floor bathroom, cleaned the third floor shower, did laundry, mowed the lawn, cleaned up the patio, cleaned the stove, cleaned the kitchen, put pictures up on the book case, cleared out from under the buffet, cleaned behind/under the liquor cabinet, washed the dog beds and changed the sheets on the guest room bed.  :D  Phew!  That’s a lot!

A few pictures of our day:

Here’s the bookshelf with Germany pictures and all filled up!

The beginnings of dinner.

Table setting

With as busy as we were today we had to set the table for dinner!

Dinner

Our delicious dinner of seared ahi tuna and tomato, cucumber, orange bell pepper, onion and lemon soy ginger dressing.  YUM!

All in all a very busy and tiring day topped off with a relaxing dinner.  I hope everyone is having a great weekend and is gearing up for the 4th of July!  :D

Semi-Lazy Sunday

After a great (busy) first week at the NCAA I wanted a really relaxing weekend.  This one hasn’t disappointed so far!

With the subzero temperatures on Friday Rod and I hunkered down with a pizza (the Natural from Pizza Hut with the rustica toppings), a movie and some great beers.  I was pleasantly surprised with the Natural from Pizza Hut, because I was never really a fan of Pizza Hut before I stopped eating white flour and sugar. The multi-grain crust was pretty lackluster (I prefer Papa John’s 100% Whole Wheat), but the sauce and toppings were very good - especially the marinated roma tomatoes!  Since it was so cold we stayed in and snuggled with the dogs.

img_5205

Mario hasn’t been a fan of the weather, and with as little fur as he has, I don’t blame him!  :)

Saturday we took a trip to Edinburgh for outlet mall shopping.  This was much needed since we both hadn’t bought much in the way of clothes since before the wedding.  We picked up a lot of wardrobe staples and replaced a lot of worn or ill fitting clothes.  The night was capped off with a stop at Shallos for dinner where we enjoyed a few beers off their winter specials, the Founders Imperial Stout and the St. Bernardus Abt. 12.

Today has been working on hanging up all of our awesome deals and just enjoying our Sunday.

img_5248

We’re making buffalo chicken bites to toss in Spicy Garlic sauce.  After that we’ll put them on big salads and enjoy our pseudo-bdubs meal.

img_5254

We’re also watching the NFC and AFC Championship games.  Go Cards and GO RAVENS (I haaate the Steelers, just like any good Bengals fan! :) )

Tomorrow I have off thanks to the MLK holiday, this is my first time since college!  I’m going to be getting an oil change and meeting the Lunch group from Fox at Fazolis.  I’m looking forward to a pretty low key day!  :)

How are you spending your MLK Holiday?  Do you have to work?

“It’s like rain on your wedding day…”

Our ceremony is outside on Saturday, so let’s keep our fingers crossed that the weather changes!  I’d love for it to be 77 degrees and partly cloudy/partly sunny.  Realistically though, as long as it’s nice from 3pm-7pm on Saturday I’ll take it (long enough for pictures, the ceremony and a little of the cocktail hour)!   :D

Keep your fingers crossed for us!

VIP Brewmaster’s Dinner

Brugge White, New Albanian Thunderfoot and 1997 Lafayette Brewing Company Big Boris Barley Wine

To kick off the Microbrewer’s Festival this year, the Brewers of Indiana Guild hosted a Brewmaster’s Dinner on Friday night.  And what a dinner it was!  We all went into the dinner with a bit of confusion over how it would be carried out.  It turned out that local celebrity chef Greg Hardesty put together a great gourmet rendition of a picnic buffet.  The menu included:

- Salad of Indiana tomatoes and sweet corn with basil vinaigrette
- Wasabi scented fingerling potatoes with wilted Asian ’slaw’ greens
- Seven bean summer ragout with applewood smoked bacon
- Grilled Fischer Farms beef sirloin with mocha ancho chili glaze
- Grilled Fischer Farms pork loin with spicy salsa verde
- Bittersweet chocolate fudge cake
- Barley wine panna cotta with marron glace

On top of that, the following beers were available:

- Brugge White
- Half Moon Honey Rye
- Ram Buttface Amber
- Mad Anthony IPA
- Brass Monkey Green Tea Pale Ale
- Lafayette Brewing Company Common Ale
- Broad Ripple Brewpub Wee Alec Heavy
- Lafayette Brewing Company 1997 Big Boris Barley Wine aged in Oliver Winery Oak Barrels
- New Albanian Thunderfoot
- Three Floyds Hvedegoop
- Brugge Diamond Kings of Heaven 2008

I think Upland’s Preservation Pilsner may have been on tap earlier in the evening as well.  The whole event kicked off about half an hour late, due to an issue with Opti Park not having power provided and a loss of refrigeration in the beer truck (oh no!).  Luckily once everything got started, everyone had a great time.  I didn’t take notes on the pairings, but I’ll do my best to recall everything.

The tomatoes in the salad were incredibly ripe and the corn, sliced into 1 inch pieces, had a great balance of salt and pepper.  Everything came together wonderfully when mixed with a light basil vinaigrette.  Everyone at our table was in love with the corn.  The suggested pairing here was either the Brugge White or Half Moon Honey Rye, both lighter beers with notable sweetness to pair with the sweet corn and a citrus flavor to cut through the oil in the vinaigrette.

The seven bean ragout was a very fresh take on a the traditional multi-bean salad that many families prepare for pitch-ins and cookouts.  The green beans had a nice crunch to them and the applewood smoked bacon was a real treat that was a surprise, as it hid well within the multi-colored sea of beans.  Ram Buttface Amber was the suggested pairing here, chosen for its lighter, yet sweet malty characteristic that would pair well with the meaty taste of the beans.  I have to be honest, I didn’t try this pairing so I can’t say how well it worked.

Wasabi was the star of the show in the fingerling potatoes and slaw greens.  Not an overly strong wasabi flavor that the trademark green pile next to your sushi provides, but a very well balanced wasabi flavor in a slaw style sauce mixed in with the potatoes and slaw vegetables.  The wasabi hid itself well up front, while the vegetables showed off their flavors, then slowly worked its way up to a noticeable, yet reserved presence.  I’m not ashamed to say I ate the excess sauce by itself off my plate.  Tippecanoe Common Ale and Upland’s Preservation Pilsner were recommended pairings here, chosen for their ability to not cover up the delicate wasabi flavor.

Both the pork and beef were being freshly grilled throughout the dinner.  The sirloin came up at a perfect doneness every time.  For those of you who don’t know what the perfect doneness for a steak is, it’s medium rare, and that is not up for debate.  Both the pork loin and the beer sirloin were well spiced and showed off how great Fischer Farms meat is.  The ancho chile glaze had a hint of chocolate that made it taste like a cross between mole and adobo.  Pairing this chile sauce and tender meat with the LBC Big Boris Barley Wine was amazing.  The buttery caramel flavors in the barley wine intertwined with the tame heat and chile sweetness of the sauce and amplified the flavors in the sirloin.  The green salsa with the pork loin was an extremely tasty combination of tomatillos, chiles, onions and fresh cilantro.  Mad Anthony’s IPA was one suggested pairing, offering up the standard “hops cut through spicy heat” pairing, but a much more complex and impressive pairing was created with Three Floyds Hvedegoop.  As with most Three Floyds beers, there was a noticable hop character that blended more than it overpowered the spiciness of the salsa.  There was a very distinct malty sweetness in this beer that brought out sweet notes in the tomatillos and pork loin.  I’m not sure what this beer is normally listed as, but I would call it an American ESB and it was great.

Dessert consisted of a very tasty brownie, made with Thunderfoot Cherry Imperial Stout with bittersweet chocolate chips mixed throughout.  It should go without saying that since the brownie was made with Thunderfoot, Thunderfoot would be a good pairing.  Imperial stouts carry a heavy roasted malt and chocolate flavor that always pairs well with chocolate and even more so with bittersweet chocolate.  The panna cotta was very light, creamy and topped with slivered almonds.  Broad Ripple Brewpub’s Wee Alec Heavy was the suggested pairing here, and what a pairing it was!  The sweet, malt flavors of the scottish ale created a root beer float experience when mixed with the cream in the panna cotta.  Quite a nice surprise, indeed!

Another highlight of the evening was the surprise of Brugge’s Diamond Kings of Heaven 2008.  This is a beer normally released for competition and rarely ever served.  Last year’s Diamond Kings was Jess and I’s drink of choice at the end of every Great American Beer Festival session.  At 13%+ ABV, last year’s Diamond Kings was a fairly intense, yet delicious Belgian Strong ale.  This year, Diamond Kings comes across as a much more drinkable Belgian Sour Ale, thanks to the surprise interaction between 20 pounds of Indiana Persimmons and the fermenting ale.  Ted (Brugge’s brewmaster) explained that he thought the skins of the persimmons created a more bitter and sour flavor as they desolved off of the fruit during fermentation.  Jess, Dave, Nate, Mike, Gina and I all agreed that this was one amazing beer and one perfect finish to a great dinner and evening.  If they do this again next year, I strongly recommend attending!

One really great weekend…

We kicked off the weekend on Thursday night with grilling out, hanging out with the dogs, taking a long walk and relaxing.  It was the perfect start to our 4th of July weekend!

Mario was a little shy still on Thursday!

On Friday we went to Cincinnati to pour beer at the City of Montgomery’s 4th of July Festival.  Mario got to meet his Grandma and Grandpa and got a quick sniffing of his cousins before we headed back to Indy.  For dinner we grilled pizza, watched the downtown Freedom Blast from our front yard and Rod visited with our neighbors.

Saturday was a big day for Mario - his first vet visit!  Everything went well there, and so we dropped him off back at home and ran a few errands.  We picked up a new bed for him and put the two of them next to each other.

His is so much bigger than Caroline’s bed, it’s so cute!  :D

We took the pups to Three Dog Bakery and then took them for a stroll up and down Mass Ave.  We came back for dinner and the pups seemed exhausted - they were so tired from all the excitement of the 4th and their trip to Three Dog Bakery.  :)

Yesterday after breakfast we walked down to Henry’s on East with the pups and had lunch with John.  The dogs were so exhausted after the 3.5 mile walk to Henrys that we were given a perfect chance to brew our Alefest Kolsch kit that we had purchased in April!  After brewing Rod cut the grass and we had a great dinner of goose burgers - burgers with bacon and all kinds of yummy spices.  We gave the pups a bath (Caroline was quite doggy smelling) which with two dogs is quite the feat!  We fed the pups “Pupcakes” from Three Dog Bakery as their reward for being good during their bath and then hung out around the house.  It was a very busy, but very relaxing weekend for us and I am happy to say I didn’t stress out about the wedding one bit!

Our “kids” fresh after their bath.  Apologies for my hair - I just let it air dry after my shower (after the trip to Henry’s)!  :)

This week will hopefully be pretty slow, with plenty of time to get a few wedding projects wrapped up.  We’re hoping to get programs, table numbers and the aisle runner taken care of this week and I have my meeting with the hair stylist on Sunday!
